Ravi Shankar

At age 18, left an established career as a touring dancer in his brother Uday Shankar's internationally successful company to undertake a seven-year traditional apprenticeship under guru Allauddin Khan, living an ascetic, isolated student life focused solely on sitar technique.

Personally proposed and organized the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison, in direct response to the refugee crisis of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

At the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, he and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan were applauded by the audience for tuning their instruments; Shankar responded, 'If you like our tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more.'

He founded the Kinnara School of Music to formally teach Indian classical music, and separately scored Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy -- sustaining work as concert soloist, film composer, and educator at once.

He sustained the demanding seven-year apprenticeship under Allauddin Khan to completion despite its documented rigor and isolation, then went on to perform at a high technical level into his nineties.
